Career Pathways with VA Technology

We put the spotlight on STEM careers as the UK National Careers Week coincides with British Science Week! A career in science, technology, engineering, and maths can offer a rewarding pathway to those who are keen to take their passion into the practical world. VA Technology supports roles in engineering, with design engineers, mechanical engineers and electrical engineers all part of their international Team VA! Hear from a few members of Team VA about why chose a career in technology & engineering.

Meet Gareth Bonner: Senior Manager: Manufacturing & Customer Support

Within days of joining VA’s manufacturing team, Gareth travelled to France to install a large shellroom system. The exposure to installation and commissioning led Gareth to swiftly move to our service team. “I became involved in how the equipment should operate and was given the opportunity to move into the engineering department as a Controls Design Engineer. This presented the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Engineering degree part-time. I spent several years in this role, during which, I led the development of new control platforms for VA Technology and soon became the Engineering Manager”. Gareth is now our Senior Manager: Manufacturing & Customer Support. Throughout his career, Gareth has acquired expertise in a multitude of engineering aspects and experienced international business culture by travelling across the world. A career in STEM can be diverse and open pathways to different disciplines in engineering.

Meet Mark Baxter – IT Manager

“I’ve always been interested in electronics and computers, so choosing a career in IT was a simple choice.  I enjoy the fact that each day can bring something different. One day I’m remoting into the US or China systems to configure their VOIP phone system; next, I could be researching a new cyber threat to see how to protect the company”. Mark has applied his interest in learning new and exciting ways of using IT to enhance the hardware and software systems used at VA Technology to ensure the company operates efficiently.

Meet George Goodwin – Team Leader: Mechanical

“I chose to study mechanical engineering as I enjoyed the mechanics modules in maths and physics at school. I enjoy solving puzzles, so mechanics appealed to me. Engineering design allows me to use creative impulses and channel them into something real. Observing the realisation of something our team designed is exciting!” George leads a team of mechanical design engineers to design components of our shellroom equipment. George provides insights and works in collaboration with Team VA to ensure our shellroom systems are built to be efficient and robust.
