Adopting automation in the shellroom

Automation can transform shell-making processes in investment casting. Incorporating automated systems can enhance efficiency, precision, and safety. Key advancements include the use of robotic shell building, automated drying systems and process management systems. Here at VA Technology, we have more than 35 years’ experience in designing automated solutions for foundries worldwide. This includes;

IC-Series Robots: Purposely designed robots used to automate shell coating, ensuring consistent coating thickness, coverage and reducing material waste. Our IC-series robots are equipped with high-torque wrists and engineering purposely to ensure a smooth and secure manipulation of shells in slurry tanks, sanders and fluidised beds.

User-Friendly Programming: Our IC-series robots are designed for simplicity and responsiveness, with editable and storable offline programming (where required) to suit diverse operator needs.

IC-Crystal Shell Management System: Our unique software offers real-time monitoring and long-term analysis of process data, including environmental conditions, system performance, equipment service alerts, and out-of-tolerance alerts. IC-Crystal has become a dependable tool to ensure all shells are manufactured within predefined KPV limits.

It starts with being equipped with the right knowledge

To ensure you maximise the potential of your automated shellroom systems, VA Technology offers comprehensive training programs. Available at our training centers in the UK, USA, and China, or onsite at customer facilities, our programs cover:

  • Robot system programming and operation
  • Shell management system programming and operation
  • Shellroom system maintenance

Led by experienced technicians with hands-on expertise in the manufacture and operation of shellroom systems, our training programs are tailored to the equipment and process. Each training program offers practical guidance to operate shell-making systems safely and efficiently. Whether you’re new to the team, upgrading your equipment, or seeking additional support, our training ensures you achieve operational excellence.

When additional support is needed, our engineers can provide remote assistance and system guidance to ensure foundry operators maximise the performance of the shellroom system. This ongoing support complements internal maintenance teams, giving operators confidence that help is always available when needed. With global customer support, we ensure uninterrupted access to the expertise you rely on.
