Career Pathways: Industrial Placement

Choosing a career can be a daunting task. Students should be given the ability to choose from a variety of career paths, industries, and roles depending on their career goals, whether it is post-graduation, while studying for a degree, or while on an apprenticeship. VA Technology recently welcomed an undergraduate chemical engineer for a short-term placement to gain insight into a role within engineering.

Matthew Mulcahy is currently studying BSc Chemical Engineering at the University of Chester. Following the completion of his second-year exams, Matthew decided to complete a short placement with VA Technology to gain a better understanding of how engineering is applied in manufacturing. Matthew has been able to apply the knowledge gained during the first two years of his degree course to design projects; creating mechanical drawings for the manufacture of shellroom equipment. VA Technology designs and manufactures equipment onsite. Matthew has observed how drawings are used by a multi-disciplined team to manufacture complex equipment and systems during his placement.

“This short-term placement has enhanced my communication and teamwork skills. Practically, I have developed a proficient understanding of CAD software. I will be able to take this forward to my final year of study and also apply this to projects in the future. I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement at VA Technology. The team has been friendly and approachable, accommodating my numerous questions and providing support during this placement. I ask a lot of questions as I am interested in gaining knowledge!
